Find out how to modify your Windows Server product key. Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter, W3GGN-FT8W3-Y4M27-J84CP-Q3VJ9.

Following on from our previous post about, we thought we should bring things up to date with Windows Server 2012 R2. If you are trying to evaluate Windows Server 2012 R2 then you will need to activate the software once you have completed the installation.

We have seen a number of people struggling with this and trying to enter a key to active it. The fact is, you do not require an evaluation key for using Windows Server 2012 R2. Once you have installed the evaluation copy you may see that it is not activated and when you try and activate, it will ask for a product key. If you get this instead of it automatically activating for you, then all you need to do is to run the following command from an elevated command prompt:  slmgr.vbs -rearm This should then automatically rearm your trial for 180 days.

Although we have not tested this, apparently you can rearm your trial version up to five times, which should give you around 2 and a half years of Windows Server 2012 R2 – by which time there may be a new version out! If all else fails, you could also try this evaluation product key:  D2N9P-3P6X9-2R39C-7RTCD-MDVJX Download If you wish to download the ISO files for the Windows Server 2012 R2 evaluation product then you can get them by clicking on the download button below: Feedback We would love to hear your feedback on this article so come and join us on or and let us know what you think!

So there are lots of TechNet articles and forum posts stating that, 'You cannot convert a domain controller that runs an evaluation version of Windows Server 2012 directly to a retail version.' We don't actually have any additional hardware on premise at this time, so the method: adding an additional DC, demote 1st, change edition, promote 1st, and then demote/remove 2nd. Would be a bit problematic. So I'm curious, what will happen if I run the DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey: /AcceptEula command?

Will it trash AD? Give an error, or mysteriously work until the server is restarted?

Robert5205 wrote: I can't answer your question, but I have a suggestion regarding the lack of hardware. I assume from your description that you're running the DC on the metal server and not in a VM.

If that's the case, you can create a VM of 2012R2, make it a DC, and transfer all the functions over to it. Then demote the metal server and run simply as a Hyper-V host. Then you'll be able to upgrade the edition of it in place. I had thought about doing that, but virtual domain controllers and me have a difficult history of not playing well with their physical brethren. So I'm trying to bypass that process.:). I've got 5 domain controllers all running StandardEval (2012r2). Two at one site, with one holding all the FSMO roles, and 3 at remote sites (all from the same VMware template I created).

No problem converting to a Volume License using the following steps: Run (as Administrator) Verify the current Edition: DISM /online /Get-CurrentEditionVerify Current Edition can be Upgraded: DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions Set Edition: DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula Reboot Run (as Administrator) Verify the current Server Family Name is correct: slmgr /dlv Activate Windows: slmgr /ato After each one I did a: Repadmin /syncall /force /APed I checked ADRep Status after each one, and all seems fine. I checked extra close when I did my FSMO one, but it was fine too! I suppose if it lets you it works, but sometimes it doesn't let you. Thanks MS for some great directions. Maybe it's only a problem for a single DC setup? This worked perfectly! You saved me so much heartache. Thank you man.
